There are two basic types of copper tubing: soft copper tubing and hard copper tubing. Copper tubes are connected using flare connections, compression connections, compression connections or soldering. Copper has a high level of corrosion resistance.

Hose textured (or ductile) copper tubing can be easily bent to bypass obstacles in the piping. Although work-hardening during drawing hardens the copper tubing, it softens again after careful annealing; therefore, Hose copper tubing is more expensive to produce than unannealed hard copper tubing. Soft copper tubing can be connected by any of the three methods used for hard copper tubing, and is the only type of copper tubing suitable for flared connections. Soft copper tubing is the most commonly used tubing for refrigerant lines in split air conditioners and heat pumps.
